The New Mexico State Flag depicts the ancient Zia’s (a native American
people) symbol of a yellow sun surrounded by four
groups of four red lines each. For the
Zia, the sacred number four symbolizes the Circle of Life: the four directions, the
four times of day, the four stages of life, and the four seasons.
But I have
another explanation for the number four, based on the beliefs of another tribe: The four cups, the four
questions, the four sons, and the four expressions of redemption.
